Description of: KRSIHNA LIFTS GOVARDHANA
Artist: Dhriti Devi Dasi
Once
Nanda Maharaja wanted to worship Indra, the god of rain, to give thanks for the flourishing conditions in Vrindavana. As he
was preparing for a sacrifice to worship Indra, Krishna intervened. Lord Krishna wanted to show the inhabitants of Vraja the
He was the only one whom they needed to worship because He is the source of the demigods. He advised His father to arrange
for the worship of Govaradhana hill instead of Indra. Nanda Maharaja agreed and the inhabitants of Gokula worshiped Govardhana
as Krishna instructed. This action angered Indra who sent torrents of rain, hail and wind to punish the inhabitants of Vrindavana.
The wind, rain and hail were so severe that they took shelter of Krishna to save them from Indra’s wrath. Lord Krishna
immediately lifted Govardhana Hill and held it on the little finger of His left hand for seven days and nights. When Indra
realized his mistake, he withdrew the rain, hail and wind. Later, in a secluded place he came and worshiped Lord Krishna and
asked for forgiveness. This pastime is mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, tenth
canto, chapters 24-27.
