Description of: KALIYA & KRISHNA
Artist:
Dhriti Devi Dasi
Once a great serpent named
Kaliya poisoned the waters of the Yamuna River so much that even birds flying over would fall down because of the poisonous
fumes. One day when Krishna brought His friends and cows to the Yamuna to drink water, the boys and calves died from the water.
Krishna glanced at the boys and calves and brought them back to life. He then jumped into the Yamuna to chastise the serpent.
After dancing on the heads of Kaliya, the serpent was at the point of death. To save himself Kaliya took shelter of Lord Krishna
and offered prayers. Krishna ordered him to leave with his family, and the Yamuna was safe by the grace of Krishna. This pastime
is mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, 10th canto, 15th chapter.
